Typical form: Pyrroloquinoline Quinone Disodium Salt

Where CoQ10 supports the mitochondria you already have, PQQ's distinguishing feature is stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis — the creation of new mitochondria — via the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway. It's often, but not always, paired with CoQ10 — in practice it's also brought in as a second phase after other work has started, or alongside something like Berberine, depending on what the whole picture calls for.
Common form & typical benefits
What the research says
| Outcome | Approx. evidence base | Typical finding |
|---|---|---|
| Cognitive function, ages 40-70 | RCT, 6 weeks, 20 mg/day | Improved cognitive test performance vs. placebo; enhanced further when combined with CoQ10 |
| Memory, ages 20-65 | RCT, 12 weeks | Improved composite and verbal memory scores |
| Sleep quality & fatigue | RCT, 8 weeks, 20 mg/day | Improved sleep quality/duration and reduced perceived fatigue |
| Mitochondrial biogenesis (mechanism) | Cell & animal studies | Activates SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway, increasing mitochondrial content |
PQQ is a newer research compound than most of the others in this library — the human trial base is smaller and mostly industry-funded (often tied to the branded BioPQQ ingredient), which is worth knowing even though the results themselves look consistently positive across the trials that exist. It's promising, but with less independent replication than something like Magnesium or CoQ10.

| Goal | Typical dose | Notes | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practitioner-used dose (this site) | 20 mg/day | Matches the standard studied dose directly | Ongoing, per practitioner |

| Sleep & fatigue (research) | 20 mg/day | Single daily dose | 8 weeks |
